ORTHODONTICS / BRACES / INVISIBLE ALIGNERS
Dr. Dori Columbus Has the Orthodontics Expertise to Help You Get Straighter Teeth and Better Biting Surface Alignment, Using Traditional Braces, Ceramic Braces or Invisible Aligners.
You have to be pretty lucky to get to adulthood with nice straight, well-aligned teeth, because nearly 75% of all children and teens have some type of dental problem by the time their adult teeth have come in, which is usually between the ages of 10 and 13.
Typical orthodontics problems include:
- Crooked teeth
- Crowded teeth
- Too much space between teeth
- Rotated teeth (one of more teeth that “stick out,” often due to overcrowding or because an adult tooth came in front before a “baby” tooth fell out)
- Overbite (the upper teeth extend farther than normal beyond the lower teeth)
- Underbite (the bottom teeth extend past the upper teeth)
- Malocclusion (“bad bite,” in which the teeth surfaces, especially those of the back teeth, do not come together correctly, creating difficulty with biting and chewing)
A healthy, beautiful smile is one of the building blocks of self-esteem and self-confidence. If orthodontics (braces) are needed to get you a better smile, Dr. Dori Columbus can help!
Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that corrects teeth and jaws that are positioned improperly. Crooked teeth and teeth that do not fit together correctly are harder to keep clean. Misaligned teeth are at risk of being lost early due to tooth decay and periodontal disease; and cause extra stress on the chewing muscles that can lead to headaches, TMJ syndrome and neck, shoulder, and back pain. Crooked teeth an also detract from ones appearance.
Braces are not just for kids!
Adults of any age can also achieve a beautiful smile with braces or aligners. The benefits of orthodontia include a healthier mouth, a more pleasing appearance, and teeth more likely to last a lifetime.
Traditional braces are comprised of brackets affixed to the teeth and wires that are threaded through slots in the brackets. Some patients may also have metal bands encircling their back teeth. Wires are held to brackets by tiny rubber bands called ligatures or O-rings. Braces are generally made of stainless steel. Wires are made of metal alloys and deliver a constant, light force, to gently move teeth over a period of time.
Ceramic braces are traditional braces with brackets that are made of tooth-colored ceramic / porcelain, making them next-to-invisible. They are fixed to the teeth, and wires – which can also be made from tooth-colored material – are threaded through the slots in the brackets and held in place in the same way as with stainless steel braces.
Invisible aligners are a modern approach to straightening teeth, using a custom-made series of aligners created for you – and only you. You may have heard of the original, famous name-brand of invisible aligners: Invisalign®
Invisible aligners are made of smooth, comfortable, and virtually invisible plastic, and you wear over your natural teeth. Wearing the aligners gradually and gently shifts your teeth into place based on the exact movement Dr. Dori prescribes for you. There are no metal brackets to attach and no wires to tighten, you just pop in a new set of aligners approximately every two weeks until your treatment is complete.
Invisible aligners are a popular choice for adults, especially adults who have jobs that require them to spend a lot of time with the public: salespeople, entertainers, men and women who do a lot of presentations as part of their jobs, etc. But they are also a popular option when you just want to look your best – you can achieve a great smile with little interference in your daily life, and the best part about the whole process is that most people won't even know you're straightening your teeth!
Traditional long-term adult orthodontics may take one to two years – even more in some cases – to straighten all your teeth. Many adults simply don't want to wear braces for that long, especially those with more easily corrected problems.
Traditional braces do, of course, have their place, and are often the only way to correct malocclusions, overbite, underbite and other drastic orthodontic challenges. But if simple straightening and re-alignment of front teeth is all that is necessary or desired, the Smile Discovery approach is an option.
Smile Discovery braces are very similar to conventional adult orthodontics, and the mechanism of moving the teeth is the same. The difference is the focus of the treatment, which is only on the teeth that show in your smile. The goal of Smile discovery is to address only the cosmetic issues of orthodontics, and to make your voyage to a better smile – a smile you'll be proud to show off – a shorter one.
